Knowing Beans about Beans
There’s a saying about “knowing beans.” Sometimes we hear it as “He doesn’t know beans about ….” (You can fill in the blank.) Beans are one of the most commonly grown vegetables. They’re fairly easy to grow. One might think that there’s not much to it, but not so. As with most topics, worth our time, there’s quite a bit to learn. Some things we can learn will give us greater success in growing, eating or preserving them. Other things we learn will add to our enjoyment both in the garden and in the kitchen.
Houz Forum: Beans, Peas & Legumes (a fun place to chat about beans)
Welcome to our course on Growing Beans! Our homesteaders have developed a fairly comprehensive course (to which they’ll be adding periodically) designed for people new to growing beans, those raising them in the city in their backyard, and even for those who’ve been raising them for quite a while, but would like to know more. We cover what you need to grow beans, how to plant, when to plant, how and when to harvest, how to save seed and what to do with your harvest as well as pests, history, processing, and pretty much everything else you can think of. If you have a question, or if something isn’t adequately covered, just leave a comment and we’ll get back to you. We’ll try to deal with it somewhere in the course!
How This Works
Our Growing Beans course is as comprehensive as we can make it! To begin, simply click the Curriculum button. From there you take lesson after lesson about growing beans. Included in this are quizzes to test your comprehension, as well as video tutorials. Experienced bean farmers may just want to read the lessons which pertain to their current situation. Feel free to ask questions in the comment section as you go along! Our homesteading mentors may take a day or two to get back to you (we’re working our own homesteads), but their responses will be thorough.
