This tomato course gives the basics of how to grow tomatoes. It also discusses topics such as saving seed and types of tomatoes. We break down the types of tomatoes by growth habit, fruit type and usage.
There are a number of ways to classify “types of tomatoes.”
The topic of hybrid versus non hybrids and genetically modified tomato varieties is also discussed. We include a lesson which goes through a list of specific varieties, discussing their qualities., Additionally we discuss the qualities which make a tomato “good.” Though “good” is somewhat subjective, we can still help you to understand the options available and to be able to experiment with likely candidates for your all time favorite!
The course deals with requirements for growing tomatoes such as soil, temperature, moisture and support as well as the the time required. While tomatoes are not difficult to grow, one must meet their growing requirements in order to succeed.
The tomato course also gives recipes for various uses of tomatoes as well as providing a brief discussion on canning and freezing. A friend of mine used to say “It’s impossible to bite into a good tomato and think a bad thought at the same time.” His point was that a good, fresh tomato is so good, it simply has to make you smile and feel good. This is true, but it’s also true that there are many other great ways to eat tomatoes!
Want to do some “window shopping?” Later we’ll give a list of sources, but for now, take a gander at “Totally Tomatoes.”
Why would a person want to take a tomato course?
Tomatoes are one of the most rewarding garden crops, especially for those with limited space with which to work. A tomato course doesn’t have to be tedious. It is our goal to make it enjoyable, even somewhat entertaining.
