A Cooking Trick
As a homesteader, my family and I raise chickens for both eggs and meat. There’s a trick though that you might want to consider doing when you cook using eggs. I want to share that with you, along with the reasons for why you should use this trick.
Since my eggs are from free roaming chickens that have acres to run over, chasing bugs, they don’t always lay their eggs in one spot. This can raise my chances of finding a old chicken egg. So, while we do use a float test to check freshness on thechicken eggs we find, there is one more thing we like to do.
We always break our eggs one at a time into a cup or bowl. After that, we put each chicken egg into the mixing bowl or frying pan. Why do we do this? We do this for two reasons. The first reason is that the float test is pretty reliable, but it’s not infallible.
That means that we can still get an bad egg into our bowl. Nothing like dropping one bad egg in with a bunch of good ones! The other reason why we do this, is because sometimes the eggs will have started incubating and there’s a partially developed chick inside.
Not particularly appetizing! So, aside from breaking the egg into a separate bowl, is there any way that you can be certain that there won’t be a chick?
The only way with home raised chickens to be certain that there won’t be a partially incubated egg is to keep your birds penned up. You have to be able to find every egg every day in order to be sure that they haven’t started incubating yet.
However, that affects the quality of the egg yolk. Your hens would be happier being allowed to roam. It’s pretty rare that I find a partially incubated egg, but it does occasionally happen. The more common egg, is the one that is about to go bad.
